Langlands Path

The practice was appointed initially in 2011 along with MAST Architects, URS Consulting Engineers and Reid Associates Quantity Surveyors to prepare proposals to develop Langlands Road a de-classified road with side paths into a Cycle Path with dual usage alongside pedestrians.

A feature of the brief was the inclusion of a Govan Timeline to be incorporated within the proposal.

Due to funding issues the project stalled over 2011/12 but restarted in 2013

A significant partner in the project was CGAP (Central Govan Action Plan)

The brief of proposal was to form an high quality, safe pedestrian and cycle thoroughfare as part of the Elderpark HA Neighbourhood Masterplan linking the Association’s new and old housing to local services.

A Tree Survey identified conditions of the existing trees and confirmed a number of in-appropriate trees from an earlier project to be removed.  All the retained Lime trees were subject to selective crown reductions, thinning and lifting – all to improve light levels to housing on the north side.

MAST and consultant artist Kate Robinson contributed with a Govan Timeline proposal formed with the Govan story over the centuries illustrated by a series of engravings onto Flame finished granite slabs.  Major Time Line panels were set at both ends of the 400m route with panels individually recording the Govan history and industrial heritage at regular intervals down the path associated with the new lighting columns.

The cycle route was constructed in a dense and smooth HRA surface white chipped and defined by a flush concrete kerb with side paths for pedestrians with a red chipping HRA surface.

Improvements also include garden boundaries with new fences and gates, garden planting and specimen tree planting to reinforce protection to the gardens along the Path.

The construction was carried out without closing the Path by a series of pedestrian barriers controlling access to the Path with circulation from end to end to allow residents continued access to the local shops.
